PLAY WITH YOUR DOG, at Great Country Farms!

Learn Life Skills while Playing Games!

Joyful Dog celebrates its third year of classes at Great Country Farms in 2017, with new and exciting opportunities for you and your dog to play and work together including:

  • Confidence Games (TTouch and Parkour) – June 17
  • Canine Parkour – July 8
  • Love the Leash – July 22
  • Nose Work – August 12
  • Silly Games – September 9

The same skills that you and your dog use for fetch, freestyle, and agility help you navigate everyday life challenges and situations. We’ll mix it up, while you and Fido work and play in the rich farm setting.

Each workshop runs from 4 – 6 p.m., with a mid-class break. If you buy a 3, 4, or 5 session punch card before your first class, the cost per session is $50. Alternatively, you may purchase individual sessions for $60.

Farm admission for one person is included in punch cards and individual session fees. Come to train, and spend the day! If you’re a Member of the Farm, please email info@joyfuldogllc.com to receive a member discount code.

Joyful Dog also offers private lessons, Training Pairs, and special events at the farm during the May through October harvest season!

Great Country Farms is located at:

18780 Foggy Bottom Road
Bluemont, VA 20135

Joyful Dog uses only force-free techniques, so Reward Based Methods, and Generally Acting Silly are strongly encouraged. We don’t use choke, prong, shock, or other force and pain-based gear.

Taking it on the Road…
At Great Country Farms. July 8, 2017. Maximum 6 dogs. $60, or punch card.

The Canine Parkour workshop can be taken alone, but is also a natural sequel to Confidence Games.

For new Parkour teams we’ll introduce targeting and stability skills, as well as guidelines for keeping your dog safe while doing Parkour in the field. Are you veterans of Joyful Dog’s Parkour and Games classes? We’ll help you brush up, and increase your skills for the challenges that the sport—also known as “Environmental Agility”—provides. Finally, you’ll take it into the field, as you learn to see Parkour possibilities around the Farm, and on your daily walks!

LOVE THE LEASH, July 22, 2017

End the Tug of War!
At Great Country Farms. July 22, 2017. Maximum 6 dogs. $60, or punch card.

Leash-handling is a major player in our dogs’ behavior during walks, and yet little attention is given to helping humans and their dogs develop good leash skills. This two-hour workshop focuses on communication and collaboration between dog and handler, and will include fun connection games, as well as instruction and practice in handling skills.

Learn ways to help you and your dog to loosen the leash, and to walk together in harmony. You’ll clarify the times that you need Lucy Lunger to walk nicely by your side, and when Sammy Sniffer is welcome to follow his nose. The farm setting will provide a combination of unique distractions and rich rewards as you and your dog become great walking companions.

We’ll help you explore equipment options to facilitate comfort and cooperation for you both, and will practice real-life leash-walking scenarios.

SILLY GAMES - September 9, 2017

The name says it all … mostly!
At Great Country Farms. September 9, 2017. Maximum 6 dogs. $60, or punch card.

All training can be a game!

Imagine if your dog would rush to you when you call her name, as readily as she chases a frisbee. What if she were as happy to sit before going out as she is to do a spin or bow?

At Joyful Dog we love silly games, because they are wonderful vehicles to train behaviors that you want when you’re being silly, and when you’re not. The playful aspect of game training keeps us more relaxed at both ends of the leash, facilitating teaching and learning.

Register online here, and in the field that asks what else you’d like the instructor to know, tell us about the behavior you’re most interested in building. We’ll do our best to work it into a silly game!

For graduates of our Reactive Dog Class Level 1, or by permission of instructors.

Continue building confidence, impulse control, focus, and calm in the presence of dogs and other stressors.

In this 6-week class, we will continue to work on changing your dog’s emotional state toward other dogs, as well as other stressors that your dog struggles with. We will build on skills and techniques learned in Level 1, and introduce new techniques to continue to help reduce reactivity with your dog.

We’ll focus on improving your experience walking with your dog, and on practicing everyday scenarios, including carefully-planned exercise drills with real life set-ups. You’ll continue to build and improve techniques for keeping your dog under threshold and thinking, in the presence of other dogs in the following situations:

Outdoors

  1. Walking with other dogs
  2. Passing other dogs
  3. Mock walks where you suddenly encounter another dog
  4. Walking in the presence of other stressors (skate boards, bicycles, joggers, etc)

Entering buildings and rooms

  1. Replicate entering and sitting in a Veterinary Hospital
  2. Replicate entering a pet retail store

We look forward to helping you to keep moving with your reactive dog in a positive stress-free direction!
